Why Wall Street Is Betting on Buried Emissions

The era of carbon capture as a mere laboratory experiment is over. According to the latest data from the International Energy Agency, global investment in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) topped $5 billion in 2025. This represents a staggering fifteenfold increase since 2020, marking a permanent shift toward industrial-scale deployment.

The momentum is driven by a new appetite for commercial debt. Over the last two years, developers secured $15 billion through project finance in Europe and North America. While the complexity of moving carbon from factory to ground remains a headache for engineers, investors are finally finding comfort in predictable, long-term revenue streams.

In the United States, the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" of 2025 preserved the critical Section 45Q tax credits. These incentives offer developers $85 per metric ton for point-source capture, providing a sturdy floor for private sector confidence. Since 2023, American companies have committed more than $56 billion to the sector. It is a massive bet on a cleaner industrial future.

The transition has not been entirely seamless. Projects with high capture costs saw a wave of cancellations in 2025 after federal grants were pulled. Currently, operational capacity sits at 50 million metric tons, with storage availability up 25% over the previous year. The math is simple: for the industry to thrive, the focus must move beyond technology toward durable market frameworks.

Growth is steady, but the clock is ticking. While the IEA suggests capacity could double by 2030, permitting hurdles are already pushing many project timelines toward the middle of the next decade. Success now depends on how quickly private capital can navigate the red tape. The technology is ready, and the money is waiting.
